La Amortajada

"La Amortajada" is a great book written by María Luisa Bombal in 1938. It´s a short novel full of delicated metaphors. Is a femenine book that explores the world of a melancholy and sensitive woman through the narrative voice of Ana María, the dead protagonist.
When I read it I fascinated with it. I don´t say that this is my favourite book because I think Alejandra Pizarnik´s literature is my favourite, but I found no one of her books in english in Amazon :( Anyway, I love "La Amortajada" too.

This is a description of the book:

This volume represents the necessary recovery of the entire work of fiction in Spanish by Maria Luisa Bombal, a production that has earned her a place of exception in contemporary literature. This novel sits on the border between reality and poetic fantasy and spirituality that contrasts fragile world of a female, the domain of dream and magic, to the brutality of some elementary and telluric male world.

Here is a review of the book on Amazon

Spiritual reading for the new Millenium!! 23 Aug 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback

A timeless and beautiful piece of literature. So many feelings all packed in one short book. Anyone trying to connect with the universe that surrounds us must read this book. The main character, La Amortajada, defines for us in simple words the essence of our own existence and how we connect with the spiritual side in all of us. Death of our physical body only provides the opportunity to become one with Eternity.

This book is one of these that you can´t don´t read. I like because is a mix between poetry and surrealism that speaks about the deepest feelings of a woman lost in love and that for this reason she dies. And is interesting that a book be able to talk about woman´s reality in a determined context in Chile and Latinoamerica where the role of women is determined aording to the male figure, who not only became in her focus and motivation, but also determined the possibles ways of being for women (although I don´t like it).
